Recently, the Bomb Disposal Patrol of the 23rd Artillery Regiment from Bolesławiec carried out several operations involving the removal of unexploded ordnance. Due to the lack of caution on the part of those who found them, tragedy was narrowly avoided.
We have already reported on one such incident on our website, in the article: He found a mortar shell and... put it in his car. Then he brought it to the city.
An equally dangerous situation occurred in Zgorzelec County. As we read on the website of the 23rd Silesian Artillery Regiment:
The report was received from the County Police Headquarters in Zgorzelec and concerned the discovery of a complete artillery round near a sports field in Porajów. After arriving at the site and conducting an assessment, the Bomb Disposal Patrol established that local residents had tried to burn the round in a bonfire on the grounds of former allotment gardens in order to obtain scrap metal and sell it.
The patrol then secured in a fragmentation-protection container a Soviet-produced 57 mm subcaliber armor-piercing artillery round dating from World War II.
As part of the “Stop Rusty Death” operation, the bomb-disposal experts remind us:
Careless handling of unexploded ordnance and misfires leads to accidents in which several people are killed and several dozen injured in Poland every year.
They add:
We remind you that if you find unexploded ordnance, do not touch it, secure the area and immediately REPORT it to the police or call the emergency number.
