Officers are checking roads in the vicinity of educational institutions, paying attention to the condition of road signs in these areas. Once the school year begins, they will also pay particular attention to drivers’ behaviour in the vicinity of educational institutions.

Police officers will also inspect transport carrying children and young people to educational institutions. What is more, during meetings with students throughout the school year, officers will discuss how to avoid dangerous situations on the way to school.

Officers:

Let us remember that parents play a huge role in preparing a child for school. We should set a good example for children. Let us make sure that our children know they should cross the road only at permitted places, sensibly and responsibly. To increase children’s safety, let us equip their clothes and backpacks with reflective elements visible after dark.

They add:

Even before school starts, every parent or guardian can show children the safe way to school. Let us walk with our children and show them where the pedestrian crossings and traffic lights are; tell them what they should pay attention to on the way to school; and explain how they should behave when approaching a pedestrian crossing and which way to look before stepping onto the crossing. Let us also tell them when they may enter a pedestrian crossing and that the safest route to school is not necessarily the shortest one.
