Police:
Driving under the influence of alcohol or a similarly acting substance makes safe participation in road traffic impossible and is prohibited by law. Driving a vehicle requires visual-motor coordination, because most of the information reaching a driver while driving is visual.
What does alcohol cause?
- impairs coordination of movements – difficulties arise in performing two or more activities simultaneously
- lengthens the driver’s reaction time
- causes impaired vision – problems with noticing road signs, pedestrians and other important elements affecting safety increase
- limits the field of vision
- causes an incorrect assessment of distance and speed – a pedestrian, another vehicle or a tree may appear much farther away than they really are.
Officers: “It should also be remembered that the more alcohol we consume, the longer it takes for this substance to be neutralized in our bodies.”
What is unconscious intoxication?
Unconscious intoxication of a driver is an extremely dangerous phenomenon. It most often occurs when someone drank alcohol the previous day and believes that not a trace of alcohol remains in their body. However, even several hours of sleep does not guarantee that the driver is in a fit condition to drive a vehicle.
What do the officers advise?
Do not drink alcohol if you plan to drive a vehicle. Do not offer alcohol to someone who intends to drive. Do not let yourself be persuaded to ride in a car with a driver who has been drinking alcohol!
How can you check whether you can get behind the wheel?
The only reliable method of determining the alcohol concentration in the body is a test performed with an electronic device bearing the appropriate certification. Such a test can be carried out, among other places, at most police units.
