On April 19, at around 1 p.m., the duty officer at the Lubin police station was informed by concerned neighbors that an intoxicated woman might be staying in one of the apartments in the Przylesie housing estate while caring for a 3-month-old child. The officer immediately dispatched a patrol from the prevention department to the indicated address.
At the scene, officers found MOPS employees, who in turn relayed information from neighbors: the child’s mother had been so drunk that she had to be carried into the apartment.
The woman’s intoxicated common-law partner was lying under the door. “Despite repeatedly knocking and banging on the door, no one opened it. There were also no sounds of a child,” Lubin police officers said.
The fire brigade was called to the scene. They managed to enter the apartment. There, officers and social workers found the completely drunk mother lying on a bed with the child, who was exhausted and severely neglected. “For this reason, it was necessary to provide help to the infant. The firefighters gave the child oxygen and cared for her until the ambulance arrived,” the police added. “The girl’s completely drunk uncle was also in the apartment; he was supposed to look after her in the mother’s absence.
Three people were detained: the 40-year-old mother, her 41-year-old brother, and her common-law partner, aged 49. All three had nearly 3‰ of alcohol in their systems.
The “caregivers” could now face up to five years in prison. (The child was placed under the care of doctors.)
