The incident occurred in one of the apartment blocks on the Kopernik housing estate in Legnica. Officers from the Municipal Police Headquarters in Legnica, Police Superintendent Zbigniew Kopij and Senior Police Sergeant Jacek Kalika, noticed during a patrol that thick smoke was coming from one of the apartments. The officers immediately went to the scene.

They entered the stairwell; it was filled with thick smoke. Police Sergeant Kamil Kwiatkowski from the Lubin headquarters, who was off duty, was standing by the apartment from which the smoke was coming. He was the first to smell smoke in the neighboring apartment. He entered the premises and helped a 46-year-old man get out. He then informed the arriving officers that another man was still inside the apartment engulfed in flames.

The officers from the Municipal Police Headquarters in Legnica entered the burning premises without hesitation and pulled out a 72-year-old man.

The officers provided both injured men with first aid before handing them over shortly afterward to the emergency medical team. The rescued men were taken to hospital. Their lives are not in danger.

For their brave, rapid and efficient actions, which certainly saved the residents of the Legnica apartment building from tragedy, the provincial police commander, Police Inspector General Tomasz Trawiński, will honor the officers with a cash award.
