The duty officer at the Municipal Police Headquarters was informed by an employee of a petrol station in one of the towns near Legnica about the driver of an Opel who had started refuelling. There would have been nothing unusual about this if not for the fact that the registration-number sticker on the vehicle’s windscreen had been covered with tape, while the car itself had duplicate licence plates fitted in such a way that one set concealed the other.

A police patrol was dispatched to the scene. Meanwhile, the 29-year-old, who had filled containers in the boot with more than 160 litres of fuel and taken windscreen-washer fluid, attempted to drive away without paying. However, a police car blocked his path. Property worth a total of PLN 760 was recovered, and the perpetrator was arrested.

In the 29-year-old’s vehicle, officers found, among other things, stolen licence plates. The suspect was taken to police custody. He faces up to five years behind bars.
