On Wednesday (August 9), a 70-year-old resident of the Nowogrodziec municipality was travelling in his car when, on one of the main roads in Bolesławiec County, he noticed two people trying to hitchhike. It was a hot day and the heat was taking its toll, so the driver decided without hesitation to help them and give them a lift to the indicated destination. After reaching their destination, the kind-hearted driver said goodbye to them and went shopping. During his shopping trip, he realised that his wallet containing his documents had been stolen. He immediately notified officers from the Police Station in Nowogrodziec.

After questioning the man, the officers took the necessary steps to recover his belongings. Shortly afterwards, they detained the suspect in the Nowogrodziec municipality. She turned out to be a 29-year-old resident of Żagań County. The driver’s wallet was found in her handbag. The police recovered the property and returned it to its owner. The woman explained that she had thrown the documents into a nearby sewer well. The assistance of waterworks employees, who had specialised equipment, was necessary to recover the items originating from the crime.

The woman will now face charges not only for theft but also for destroying documents. She was charged with a crime and gave a statement in which she admitted to the offence. The case, together with the indictment, will be referred to court, which will decide the sentence. She faces up to five years in prison for theft and up to two years for destroying the documents.
