A reader wrote: “I have the overwhelming impression that Bolesławiec is a city of junkies and dealers; I keep reading such news from you.” We asked the police whether drug-related crime is really such a major problem in Bolesławiec and the county.

“The phenomenon of using and trading in narcotic substances concerns not only Bolesławiec County, but the entire country,” emphasizes Anna Kublik-Rościszewska, spokesperson for the County Police Headquarters in Bolesławiec. “Police officers are constantly improving their effectiveness in detecting this type of crime, which leads to an increase in the number of people held accountable for offenses involving narcotic substances (possession, dealing, cultivation and distribution), and consequently the number of investigations being conducted has also increased.”

We also asked how many arrests related to drug crime there had been in the first halves of 2016 and 2017. “Not every case involving the detection of a perpetrator of a drug-related or any other crime,” the spokesperson noted, “ends with the person being arrested. Therefore, in this case, a more reliable indicator is the number of investigations conducted in connection with drug-related crimes: there were 40 in the first half of 2016, and 91 in the corresponding period of the current year.”

In the first half of 2016, Bolesławiec police secured a total of 1,682.5 g of drugs, while in the first half of 2017 they secured 681.9 g, 121 ecstasy tablets and four cannabis plants.

We also asked the Provincial Police Headquarters for such statistical data. We are still awaiting the KWP’s response. And what do our readers think about this? Is drug-related crime a major problem in our county? We invite you to join the discussion.
