– We remind cyclists that they are subject to road traffic regulations, just like other road users – say the officers from Zgorzelec. – Cyclists often forget that they are also drivers and can likewise cause a tragic accident.
This obvious appeal is not without reason. On May 22, officers from Zgorzelec detained two cyclists traveling on the streets of our county under the influence of alcohol. One of those detained, a 36-year-old resident of Studniska Dolne, will answer for riding after consuming alcohol, for which he faces a fine of PLN 300 to 500. Meanwhile, a 63-year-old resident of Koźmin, who had nearly 2.5 per mille of alcohol in his system, will receive a PLN 500 fine.
The police add: – An intoxicated cyclist will not lose their driving licence. However, a police officer may refrain from imposing a fine when they determine that the rider posed a danger in road traffic, and then submit a motion for punishment to the court, which will decide whether the cyclist will be banned from driving vehicles other than motor vehicles.
Since the beginning of March alone, officers from Zgorzelec have detained 50 drivers under the influence of alcohol, of whom 12% were moped riders and 28% were cyclists.
