The arrest took place on April 6 at a commercial outlet in Legnica. Police officers and border guards identified and then detained two men, aged 66 and 41, suspected of possessing a significant quantity of goods without Polish excise-duty markings.
The illegal products—more than 2,000 packs of cigarettes, 24 kg of tobacco and 11 litres of spirits—were found in hiding places at the stall, in vehicles and on properties belonging to the detained men.
Both detainees are residents of Legnica. It was estimated that the losses to the State Treasury if the illegal goods had reached the market would have amounted to PLN 60,000.
The 66- and 41-year-olds face up to three years in prison and substantial fines.
