Officers from the Criminal Division of the District Police Headquarters in Zgorzelec were investigating “grandchild” and “police officer” scams. An incident of this type occurred on November 2 in Zgorzelec. A 69-year-old resident of the city received a phone call; the caller claimed to be her son. He asked the woman for urgent financial assistance in connection with a road accident. The alleged son then handed the phone to a man who claimed to be a police officer. The latter said that the quasi-son needed money to compensate the victims of the accident so that the prosecutor would not open a case. He also informed the woman that a courier would come to collect the money.
The victim went to the bank, withdrew PLN 6,000 and handed it to a young man. Shortly afterward, the woman realized that she might have been defrauded and notified the police about the entire incident.
Zgorzelec officers worked to identify and arrest the fraudster, checking every piece of information. They analyzed every trace and lead in detail. Their actions led to the identification of the perpetrator. The 21-year-old was arrested in Myślibórz (West Pomeranian Voivodeship). It turned out that the man collected cash and then handed it over to his accomplices. The fraudster operated not only in Zgorzelec, but throughout Poland.
The man has already been charged with 15 offenses. It is known that he defrauded people in Zgorzelec, Barlinek, Zawiercie, and the towns of Łobez and Brzesko. The total losses he caused amounted to PLN 60,000.
The prosecutor placed the 21-year-old under police supervision. The case is ongoing, and officers do not rule out further arrests and charges. The arrested fraudster faces up to eight years in prison.
