At the beginning of July, a group of archaeology students began a three-week placement in Krępnica. The young archaeologists are carrying out excavation work. “The construction of the motorway is the reason we are here. We are digging through square metres in search of flints and bone fragments,” Tomasz Zawisko, a second-year student, tells IstotneInformacje.pl. “No other artefacts have survived,” he adds.

The excavations have been under way for several days. The trainees are supervised by dr Mirosław Masojć. “We have essentially been conducting work at this site since 2000. That was when we discovered the place,” the scientist says. – “What we are examining here are the remains of a Mesolithic camp.”

In 2004, archaeologists examined almost a hectare of land in Krępnica, near Bolesławiec. This year, the work is expected to be completed. On the outskirts of the motorway under construction, researchers found flint tools that were used in hunting, as arrowheads, and in household tasks, including cutting hides and working wood. “There are also quite a lot of bones here,” Mirosław Masojć points out. They made it possible to establish that a group of people lived near Bolesławiec 9,000 years ago. “They established a small village beside the old riverbed of the Bóbr,” the archaeologist adds.

All the finds will be carefully described and examined, and will then be transferred to the museum of the Institute of Archaeology at the University of Wrocław. “The final stage of the work will be the publication of these materials and their presentation at academic conferences,” says Mirosław Masojć.
