As we read on the Bolesławiec Municipality website:
After receiving information about the flood threat, the municipal crisis staff identified the areas most at risk. On September 15, all OSP units immediately headed to Krępnica first.
Along the embankments located in the part of the village on the side of Dąbrowa Bolesławiecka, approximately 1 km of sandbags was laid, creating reinforcement and raising the embankments by around 0.5 metres. Residents, firefighters and volunteers from other localities set to work filling the sandbags.
The crisis staff directed further deliveries of sand to the village, and when the risk of the embankments breaking became very real, while the forecast arrival of the flood wave threatened to breach them, a decision was made to evacuate Krępnica.
Some Residents nevertheless decided to remain on site and continue defending the village against the floodwaters. When the road from Bolesławice and the other road from Dąbrowa Bolesławiecka were flooded, the only access route to Krępnica led along a forest road from Kliczków. The current flowing across the roadway was so strong that it posed a risk both to heavy OSP vehicles and to agricultural equipment such as loaders, which delivered sandbags until the very last moments; the bags had been piled up by the school in Dąbrowa Bolesławiecka.
Municipal officials:
After the evacuation had been ordered and access via public roads had been cut off, OSP units, volunteers and the military were dispatched to further localities (Trzebień, Trzebień Mały, Stara Oleszna, Parkoszów, Bolesławice) to build reinforcements against the approaching flood wave. The municipal crisis staff organized water, meals, generators, fuel for the generators and the excavators in operation, as well as lighting. There was an enormous amount of work.
And they conclude: – It was fortunate that we could count on good people who opened their shops and warehouses at night, but the real heroes are the Residents and volunteers who reinforced the embankments throughout the night. Breaches in the embankments in many places south of Krępnica significantly lowered the level of the flowing water, preventing the embankments in the village itself from breaking and the village from flooding. Ultimately, the water reached the embankments but did not overflow their crest.
