On the evening of July 4, security guards at one of the stores detained a man who had attempted to buy a laptop at the price of an alarm clock. The suspect first determined how the cameras were positioned. He then took an alarm clock and a laptop from the shelf and went to the store changing room. There, using scissors and adhesive tape, he cut the barcode off the alarm clock's packaging. He stuck the cut-out barcode over the laptop's barcode.

A security employee who had been closely observing the man from the outset noticed that the 21-year-old was paying a decidedly too low amount at the checkout. He decided to intervene. After being detained, the fraudster tried to get rid of the scissors and tape.

The man admitted attempting to commit the crime. He now faces up to 8 years in prison.
