Zgorzelec police were informed about the incident by two victims. According to their account, as they were walking along one of Zgorzelec's streets on Saturday night, a silver Opel Astra drove up to them. There were two men wearing civilian clothes inside the car. The driver showed an object resembling a police badge and said: “Zgorzelec Police.”

The quasi-police officers, without getting out of the car, checked the pedestrians' IDs and then demanded that they hand over their mobile phones. (They claimed they wanted to check whether the phones had been stolen.) The unsuspecting men handed their phones and documents to the alleged police officers. At that moment, the driver abruptly set off and drove away with the stolen items.

Zgorzelec officers took up the case and just a few days later tracked down the car and arrested the fake police officers: two Zgorzelec residents aged 28 and 29. During questioning, one of the detainees stated that it was only meant to be a joke. The detained alleged officers have already been charged with fraud. They now face up to 8 years in prison.
