Officers established that the perpetrator, who was unidentified at the time, had set fire to four garages in Zielonka (Zgorzelec County, Węgliniec Municipality). The fire destroyed a VW Passat, a moped, a quad bike, a mountain bike and other items kept in the garages. The victims estimated their losses at PLN 50,000.
Police detained the suspect. The 47-year-old man denied having any connection with the incident. The officers did not believe him, however: they questioned witnesses, collected evidence and gathered information indicating that the detainee was indeed the arsonist. In addition, the officers proved that the man had committed other offences, including causing bodily harm and making criminal threats against residents of Zielonka. (He threatened to kill them.)
The 47-year-old now faces up to 8 years in prison. At the request of police officers from Pieńsk and the prosecutor’s office, the court ordered the arsonist to be held in pre-trial detention for three months.
