– I regret to say that the number of robberies increased – said the police chief. In 2015, there were 6 more than in 2014. The number of thefts also increased (by 45), as did burglaries (by 54). The number of the latter is – as Henryk Stefanko stated – a failure of our police force. The number of fights, on the other hand, decreased.

– As for car thefts, some are carried out by specialised groups, mainly from Zgorzelec and Lubin. This applies primarily to cars of such makes as Audi, Volkswagen and BMW – said the head of the Bolesławiec police. It also happens that thieves steal old cars and then sell them at scrap-metal collection points.

Criminals most often break into basements and allotment cottages, mainly stealing power tools. – These thefts are committed by a group of 7–8 people operating in various combinations; the one with the biggest record has 28 offences to his name – H. Stefanko told the councillors. – These people have made crime their way of life; it is their source of income.

Last year, there were also more acts of vandalism (by 6), mainly involving scratched cars.

In 2015, 306 people were arrested at the scene (the figure includes drunk drivers), compared with 175 the year before. – The number of incidents is growing, but so is our effectiveness – the police chief stressed. What is more, officers calculated that last year a citizen waited an average of 7 min 37 sec. (The year before, they waited 12 sec less).

Last year, there were also more accidents than in 2014 (by 3; only one fatality), but the number of collisions fell from 365 to 358. According to H. Stefanko, this was also a result of stricter road-traffic regulations.

Encouragingly, last year no one in our county attempted the so-called “grandchild” scam (and consequently no one was robbed in this way). We repeatedly warned about these frauds in the pages of Istotne.pl.

– The most important task for this year is to reduce offences against property – the police chief added.
