Police officers from the Prevention Department of the Jelenia Góra Municipal Police Headquarters arrested a 35-year-old homeless man after a chase. He is suspected of temporarily using a vehicle and driving it in breach of court-imposed bans. The arrested man also had blood taken for testing, as he most likely drove the car under the influence of intoxicating substances.
The incident occurred on December 15, at approximately 10:30 p.m. Acting on orders from the duty officer of the Municipal Police Headquarters, police officers went to a reported road incident that had most likely occurred at the intersection of Jana Pawła II and Grunwaldzka streets in Jelenia Góra.
At the scene, they noticed two vehicles standing across the road: an Audi and a Renault Clio. When he saw the police officers, the driver of the Renault got out of the car and fled. The officers pursued him. They arrested him after several minutes.
The driver turned out to be a 35-year-old man. He was very aggressive and vulgar and did not respond to the officers’ orders. He was also highly agitated. He admitted that he had taken intoxicating substances that day.
The police established that the 35-year-old had driven the vehicle in breach of two court-imposed bans, which remain in effect until April 18, 2017.
During the proceedings, another man arrived and stated that the Renault belonged to him and that the 35-year-old had taken it from him the previous day without his consent. The men had been traveling together, and when the owner got out for a moment, the 35-year-old got behind the wheel and drove away.
The victim searched for the car, and when he saw his vehicle stopped at a red light in Jelenia Góra, he decided to prevent the driver from escaping, blocked the road and notified the police.
The 35-year-old was taken into police custody. He faces up to five years in prison.
