The tragic incident occurred 22 years ago, during the night of 21–22 August 1993, on the road from Chmielno to Zbylutów. Returning from a dance in Chmielno, the young woman was attacked by the perpetrator, severely beaten and raped. The attacker then murdered her.

The girl’s mutilated body was found on 23 August 1993. For 22 years, the perpetrator of this brutal murder remained unpunished.

However, despite the discontinuation of the investigation, intensive efforts by a prosecutor from the District Prosecutor’s Office in Jelenia Góra and officers of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Wrocław led to the arrest of the murderer. Previously unavailable techniques for examining evidence secured at the scene also helped. These included a detailed and rapid method of testing DNA from traces secured at the murder scene and material collected for comparative testing from the identified suspect.

The murderer turned out to be a resident of a village near Lwówek, currently 41-year-old Jan G. He was 19 at the time of the crime.

The prosecutor charged him with murdering the victim with particular cruelty and raping her.

The suspect confessed to the rape. However, he denied killing his victim.

At the request of the Jelenia Góra district prosecutor, the local District Court remanded Jan G. in temporary custody for three months. The man had previously been convicted of driving while intoxicated and giving false testimony. He now faces up to life imprisonment.

“This case clearly shows that no perpetrator of murder, even after several decades, can feel unpunished,” say investigators from Jelenia Góra.
