An outstanding recommendation for this title is the Honorary Patronage of the President of the Republic of Poland, granted to the National Reading of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s Trilogy and the Film Premiere. "Potop Redivivus" by Jerzy Hoffman, an adaptation of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s work created “to uplift the hearts,” is intended to help awaken patriotism and strengthen national pride. In this way, the cinema offers an opportunity to commemorate Independence Day.
In 1974, at the 1st Polish Feature Film Festival in Gdańsk, Jerzy Hoffman’s "Potop" received the "Golden Lions" award. The following year, it was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Forty years later, we are watching "Potop Redivivus". The film, digitally reconstructed by the National Film Archive, was re-edited and shortened under the supervision of the director himself.
"Potop Redivivus" is a project of the National Film Archive, created out of the need to present "Potop" to contemporary audiences on the big and small screens in excellent quality and in a new, attractive form. The reconstruction was carried out as part of the Digital Repository of the National Film Archive, with the support of the Polish Film Institute and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, with the participation of TVN S.A.
The two-part film underwent full conservation and reconstruction, carried out by Budapest’s Magyar Filmlabor and Warsaw’s ORKA Production Studio. The meticulously restored film was edited anew under the artistic supervision of Jerzy Hoffman and Jerzy Wójcik. Under the director’s supervision, a version of the film with a more dynamic narrative was created, running for 185 minutes.
