In February last year, we reported that Janusz Korczak II General Secondary School in Bolesławiec would become accessible to people with disabilities. “For a long time, we have been monitoring the number of middle-school students who have difficulty walking or use wheelchairs,” Alicja Krzyszczak, head of the Education, Culture, Physical Culture and Sport Department of the Bolesławiec County Office, told us at the time. “After all, these students also have the right to a full education.”

Now both the County and the school are going a step further. “Even during the summer break, a lot of good things are happening at our school,” says Mirosław Sakowski, principal of II LO. Three restrooms are being renovated, and they too will be adapted for people with disabilities.
The cost of this project is PLN 60,000. The funds come from the budget of Bolesławiec County, but it is already known that the county authorities managed to obtain PLN 24,000 from the State Fund for Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities.

Starting in September 2014, three students with disabilities will attend the school (one of them has already completed a year of study at the school, while the other two will only begin their education at II LO). “I can only be happy that the principal has so much energy and so many ideas—and that he is putting them into practice,” Alicja Krzyszczak tells us today. “The County has long been considering adapting one of its schools for people with disabilities. As early as 2009, I met with designers regarding the elevator. We are living in the 21st century. It is a requirement of our times.”

“I would like to sincerely thank the Bolesławiec County Board for providing the money for all these projects,” Mirosław Sakowski emphasizes.

But this is not the only renovation taking place at II LO. On the top floor, carpeting is being replaced and classrooms are being painted. The furniture—tables, benches and desks—will also be replaced. The cost of this project is approximately PLN 40,000. “Over the past three years, we have managed to renovate all the classrooms and corridors, replace the furniture and purchase computer equipment,” the principal of Janusz Korczak II General Secondary School lists. He assures us that everything will be ready by September this year.
