The basement of II Liceum Ogólnokształcącego im. Janusza Korczaka in Bolesławiec has a chance to become one of the key points in the city’s civil protection system. According to information provided by Bolesławiec County Executive Tomasz Gabrysiak during a session of the County Council, the building was positively assessed by the County Building Supervision Inspector. The plan is to adapt the facility as a shelter for civilians.
The analysis shows that the school basement already meets most technical requirements. One essential element is missing: an emergency power supply.
According to estimates by the County authorities, around 600 people will be able to find shelter in the basement of II LO.
Importantly, the costs of adapting the facility are expected to be relatively low and should not exceed several hundred thousand zlotys. Compared with building new shelters, this will be a fast and economical solution.
The County Executive pointed out that the building itself was probably constructed in the 1960s or 1970s and may already have been designed with protective functions in mind. Today, those assumptions are proving remarkably relevant.
Adapting the high school basement is part of a broader plan to increase the number of shelter spaces in the city. Together with other investments, the County wants to provide around 2,000 places for residents. With a population of approximately 40,000, this means protection for roughly 5 percent of the population.
We will certainly return to this topic.
