A wedding ceremony and reception should be among the happiest days for a married couple. But sometimes someone tries to take advantage of that fact. That is what happened in September in the Kwiatowe housing estate. During a wedding reception, unknown perpetrators broke into the home of one of the newlyweds. “They were clearly looking for money,” a person related to the victims tells us. Fortunately, they stole only a small amount—PLN 680.

So far, this is the only case of this type of theft this year. However, as might be expected, such incidents had already occurred in previous years. “We carried out preventive measures to warn people who will be getting married in the near future about similar situations,” says Anna Kublik-Rościszewska, spokesperson for the Bolesławiec police.

“Wedding customs have been the same for years. During the reception, collected envelopes or gifts are taken home or hidden in some room, which is not always secure—a room that is unlocked or accessible to everyone. Thieves also know and exploit these customs,” the spokesperson explains.

The district police chief appealed to all parishes in the district to warn future newlyweds. The announcement reads:

Recently, officers of the District Police Headquarters in Bolesławiec recorded the theft of gifts and envelopes containing money, given on the occasion of entering into marriage.

The perpetrators probably observe wedding guests and take advantage of the moment when gifts and money are moved during the wedding celebrations to another place, for example, to the newlyweds’ home. Taking advantage of the guests’ absence, the perpetrator or perpetrators break into rooms where the money and gifts are stored and steal them […].

Theft with burglary is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
