“Ida” is a beautiful and delicate film, with wonderful black-and-white cinematography, excellent music and a great performance by Agata Kulesza. The film is winning more awards at festivals: the “Golden Lions” at the 38th Gdynia Film Festival, the FIPRESCI critics’ award in Toronto, the Warsaw Grand Prix and the Ecumenical Jury Award at the Warsaw Film Festival (WFF), as well as the main award at the 57th London Film Festival.

Pawlikowski received the WFF Grand Prix “For the remarkable combination of screenplay, direction, cinematography, acting and music, which resulted in a beautiful and delicate film portraying Polish post-war society in the 1960s, struggling with its own demons.”

In turn, the international jury in London explained its verdict with the words: “We are full of admiration for Ida, a film made in the director’s homeland, whose international career began in Great Britain. We are moved by this bold work, which delicately and insightfully examines a painful history—the occupation and the Holocaust. A history that is still alive. We paid particular attention to the emotionally charged language with which he told his story.”
