Bolesławiec police recently received a report from a resident of the Warta Bolesławiecka commune. An unknown perpetrator broke into her bank account and stole money. The woman explained that while logging in to the website, a message appeared saying that she needed to install a security certificate and provide her telephone number. The resident of our county followed the instructions. The data was used by the thief.
The police remind people of the basic safety rules for using electronic banking:
- do not log in to transaction services in publicly accessible places, such as internet cafés
- protect your customer number and password
- do not provide one-time codes, your login and password, or your telephone number on websites you do not know
- do not open attachments sent by e-mail or through internet messengers by unknown people
- check the date of your last login to the system
- log in only through the website indicated by your bank; before logging in, always check whether the connection is encrypted (the website address then begins with https) and whether a padlock symbol is visible in the browser
- do not use an address or link received by e-mail or internet messenger to log in. A bank never sends such messages. Such correspondence should be treated as an attempted scam involving the extraction of confidential data by people impersonating a financial institution
- if you use SMS codes to authorise operations in an online service, always check whether the SMS message with the authorisation code corresponds to the operation you are carrying out. Pay particular attention to the account number and the transaction amount
- if you use a hardware token, remember never to provide the device’s serial number, PIN number or codes generated by the token to unauthorised persons. A bank never sends e-mails asking for this information and never asks you to enter it on the login page
- during telephone calls, a bank never asks for your PIN
- when logging in, a bank never asks you to provide codes or send such data by e-mail
- remember to log out of electronic banking safely. First click the “Log out” button, and only then close the internet browser window.
