No one needs convincing that pita is a true delicacy. The residents of Lipiany proved that it is also a great excuse for having fun by organizing the Balkan Pita Celebration.

Saturday, September 21, was filled with treats, good fun and competition. The members of the Active Women’s Association made sure there were cakes, hot dishes and, of course, pita. The queues at the food stalls were enormous, showing that they had done an excellent job.

Those who decided to enter the competition for the tastiest pumpkin pita also performed wonderfully. Twelve people took part. The jury, consisting of Bogusław Uziej, chair of the Municipal Council, Renata Czerwińska, head of the Bolesławiec County Development and Promotion Office, and Ryszard Miziniak, unanimously decided that Irena Strojanowska from Lipiany was unrivalled. The winners and all the participants in this delicious competition were congratulated by Bolesławiec Municipality Head Andrzej Dutkowski, Deputy Municipality Head Roman Jaworski and the chair of the Municipal Council.

In addition to the tastiest pita, the most beautiful property in Lipiany was also awarded. The diploma and prize went to Halina and Robert Jańcowie. The competition jury, which assessed all the properties and homesteads in Lipiany, noted that the village clearly stood out from others. They especially pointed out that all the properties were tidy and well maintained.

The municipal stage resounded with music. The first performers were students from the Primary School in Kraśnik Dolny. The children prepared a special artistic programme combining singing and dancing. They were followed on stage by the Niespodzianka ensemble from Tomaszów Bolesławiecki, which also sang and danced. The participants in the Vocal Workshop led by Agnieszka Orawiec also gave an excellent performance. Next came the Municipal Song and Dance Ensemble “Jutrzenka,” which, as always, attracted many of its fans among the audience.

Various competitions were also prepared for everyone who decided to spend the last Saturday of the month in Lipiany, both children and adults. The first competition involved rolling a pumpkin between posts against the clock. Others included a proverb competition and a strongman competition. However, the greatest excitement was generated by the competition to stretch dough for pita. Jola and Zygmunt from Kruszyn proved unrivalled.

A demonstration of making pita dough attracted enormous interest. Its presenter, Anna Orłowska, introduced those gathered to the secrets of making pita. Anyone interested could ask about the details of preparing the dough and filling. After the presentation, the pita went into the oven and later to a stall, where it could be purchased.

The final performers on stage were young musicians from Nowe Jaroszowice. The rock band Little Fingers, whose lineup consisted of Diana Baranowska, Jakub Biliński, Bartek Wieczorek and Wiktor Zatylny, played and sang, among other things, songs by Metallica and Jimi Hendrix.

To conclude the Balkan Pita Celebration, a huge bonfire was lit and everyone was invited to join in a dance party.
