The opening ceremony of the school year was held at the Janusz Korczak II General Secondary School in Bolesławiec. Among those attending the ceremony were Senator of the Republic of Poland Jan Michalski, Parents’ Council representative Beata Skrzypek, and Maria Ryżewska, mother of Rafał, this year’s top secondary-school graduate. Mrs. Maria accepted the Primus Inter Pares award for her son from school principal Mirosław Sakowski.
The ceremony was also an opportunity to welcome new teachers: Beata Solpa-Tertel (entrepreneurship and legal education) and Rev. Jakub Norman (religious education), as well as to say farewell to Krzysztof Koszak, a physics and computer science teacher who is retiring.
Mirosław Sakowski spoke: “The pass rate for the matura examination at our school is 8% higher than in the county, 12.4% higher than in the voivodeship, and 19% higher than in Poland. One in five secondary-school graduates in the country failed the final examination. That statistic does not apply to us—everyone passed here!”
He added: “I encourage everyone to work and study hard, to give their all, so that our school enjoys the respect of the local community and so that we achieve the best possible results in education, culture, and sport.”
“The time spent at secondary school is a period in which certain ideas about the future take shape,” Senator Jan Michalski said, addressing the students of II LO. “It is worth nurturing these ideas and dreams. Those who persevere will certainly succeed.”
That day also saw the opening of the first photography exhibition of the school year at II General Secondary School. The artists presenting their work were: Joanna Turczyńska, a German teacher and photography enthusiast, and Bohdan Pieliński, a retired electronics engineer and author of a nature photoblog. “Our school is not only about gaining knowledge, but also about developing passions and interests,” Mirosław Sakowski stressed during the opening.
