In November last year, we reported that Janusz Korczak II General Secondary School in Bolesławiec became the district’s double basketball champion. The girls’ and boys’ teams from II LO advanced to the zone competition. In the zone semifinal, the Bolesławiec girls defeated teams from Lubań and Mirsk and lost to the basketball players from Zgorzelec. Nevertheless, they qualified for the final competition, where they won bronze.
In the semifinal, the boys’ team proved better than the teams from Lubań and Lwówek Śląski. In the final, the Bolesławiec team had to acknowledge the superiority of two favored teams from Zgorzelec, whose lineups included Turow players. Ultimately, after losing by one point to the basketball players from Jelenia Góra, the II LO team finished fourth.
“I am very pleased with these results,” says Edyta Kwiecińska, a physical education teacher and supervisor of both championship teams. “Many students attend the extracurricular sports classes; they are held regularly, and we are seeing the results. I hope that next year both teams will win at least bronze medals, but I also think that silver and gold are within our reach,” she adds. “Our school has achieved very good results in basketball for a long time, and both teams are continuing this tradition,” adds Mirosław Sakowski, the school’s principal.
