At the beginning of June, we wrote that four runners from the Janusz Korczak II General Secondary School in Bolesławiec had taken first place in the Swedish relay at the Lower Silesian Athletics Championships. Adam Filipek, Maciej Chojnacki, Maciej Goss and Marek Mikułko advanced to the Polish Championships, which were held on 22 June in Łódź.

The Bolesławiec team finished fifth in Poland, beating teams from large cities. “This is the greatest sporting success in the history of II LO,” emphasizes Mirosław Sakowski, the school’s headmaster. And it could have been even better. “If everything had gone according to plan, we would have finished third, or perhaps even second,” adds Piotr Napiórkowski, a physical education teacher.

Importantly, the three athletes from the II General Secondary School have a chance to repeat this success next year (Maciej Chojnacki has already graduated from the school). “We are only still looking for a 200-metre runner for the championship relay,” smiles Krzysztof Malina, a physical education teacher.

Why did the secondary-school students choose athletics? “It is an individual sport,” explains Marek Mikułko. “You work for your own result, and thanks to that you know how good you are,” he adds. “Everyone works for their own account,” Maciej Goss adds.

The athletics coaches from the II General Secondary School are: Edyta Kwiecińska, Krzysztof Malina and Piotr Napiórkowski.

It is also worth noting that at the Lower Silesian Beach Volleyball Championships, the girls’ team from II LO (consisting of: Dorota Burdyna, Dominika Mienculewicz and Zofia Lenkiewicz) finished fourth.
