Four runners from the Janusz Korczak II General Secondary School in Bolesławiec took first place in the Swedish relay at the Lower Silesian athletics championships. Adam Filipek, Maciej Chojnacki, Maciej Goss and Marek Mikułko advanced to the Polish Championships, which will be held on June 22 in Łódź.

“This is a major success,” says Piotr Napiórkowski, physical education teacher. “Our team defeated a very strong team from Zgorzelec and the sports school team from Wrocław.”

Marek has been training at MKS Piast Lwówek Śląski for four years, while Maciej Goss has recently started training at Bolesłavia. Why did they choose athletics? “It is an individual sport,” Marek explains. “You work for your own result, and thanks to that you know what you are worth,” he adds. “Everyone works for their own account,” Maciej adds.

The relay team’s qualification for the Polish Championships is not the only success achieved by the athletes from II LO. Arkadiusz Kołomyjski won the title of Lower Silesian champion in the discus throw. Bronze medals at the provincial championships went to: Oskarowi Sulikowskiemu (shot put) and Marek Mikułko (javelin throw).

“I am very happy about our students’ successes,” emphasizes Mirosław Sakowski, headmaster of II LO. “It is worth adding, however, that the school earns accolades not only in sport, but also in Olympiads and mathematics and Polish-language competitions. In this respect, it is a breakthrough year for the school, and the coming years will be even better,” he predicts.
