The ceremony marking the beginning of the new academic year at the University of the Third Age operating at UE Wrocław was held on Saturday, 15 October, in the auditorium of Municipal School Complex No. 2. Among those attending the ceremony were Professor Jarosław Witkowski, UE vice-rector for international cooperation, Bolesławiec Mayor Piotr Roman, Deputy Mayor Kornel Filipowicz, City Secretary Jerzy Zieliński, head of the Bolesławiec City Council Józef Pokładek, Deputy Council Head Janina Piestrak-Babijczuk, and director of the Bolesławiec Cultural Centre–International Ceramics Centre Ewa Lijewska-Małachowska.
“The Bolesławiec University of the Third Age fulfils educational and activation goals. Activation here is multidirectional: intellectual, physical, creative and social. Activity in later adulthood rejuvenates people and gives them wings,” says Wiesława Olczyk, the founder and manager of UTW.
The university’s programme is tailored to the needs and expectations of its students. It includes English and German, computer basics, physical activities, including Nordic walking, as well as psychological, painting and music workshops. UTW also runs a cultural and educational club and a hiking section.
“We organise trips to the theatre and opera, tourist, historical and nature excursions, themed meetings, lectures, a seniors’ Olympics and picnics,” Wiesława Olczyk lists. “We received a Self-Accreditation Certificate from the Foundation for the Jagiellonian University for our very interesting programme. There is no better medicine than the University of the Third Age!” she adds.
