On Saturday, September 26, 2026, the court decided that the 33-year-old who shot a police officer on Thursday will spend the next three months in pre-trial detention.
– The legal classification will be changed to the completed murder of a police officer, obviously combined with an active assault – prosecutor Sebastian Woźniak reports. – It is not the case that everything has been explained and completed. Witness interviews are still ongoing. We will, of course, continue collecting evidence in the form of expert opinions, including a ballistic opinion. An autopsy of the injured party has also been scheduled; unfortunately, without it, we cannot continue these proceedings.
Mariusz G. had criminal convictions in Poland and Germany
The prosecutor’s preliminary findings indicate that the weapon used to shoot police officer Natan Sieroń was illegal—the suspect possessed it without the required permit.
– It was also established that Mariusz G. had been convicted in Germany for illegal possession of and trafficking in weapons, and was sentenced there to a fine in 2024 – Sebastian Woźniak reports. – In Poland, approximately 10 years ago, he was convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol. The remaining circumstances we reported over the past two days have changed only slightly. It is known that police officers at the scene initially carried out operational and reconnaissance activities and then moved on to procedural activities. They had credible information that items originating from a theft at one of the supermarkets might be stored there. The suspect returned to the scene and opened fire toward one of the officers. We are, of course, investigating what happened afterward; expert opinions, including a ballistic opinion, are necessary here – the prosecutor adds.
Did the police know whom they were going to see?
At this stage of the investigation, the prosecutor did not disclose whether the officers who went to Mariusz G.’s home were wearing civilian clothes or whether they knew that the man had previously been convicted of illegally possessing a weapon.
– Officers who go to carry out this type of activity prepare beforehand and gather information about the people who may be at a given address: who they are, whether they have criminal records, and, if so, for what – the prosecutor replied. – However, I would not want to comment on the findings in this regard. Of course, these findings are also being made during the course of this investigation – Woźniak added.
Did Mariusz G. shoot to kill?
At present, the prosecutor’s office has no doubts regarding the defendant’s mental capacity. At a later stage of the proceedings, the 33-year-old’s background will be analyzed and, if the prosecutor has doubts about the man’s mental capacity, experts may be appointed in the case.
– When we talk about intent, we must bear in mind the factual circumstances, that is, the course of the incident itself – Woźniak reports. – Undoubtedly, a forensic medicine opinion following the opening and examination of the body may answer many questions and help us determine whether the intent was direct, premeditated, or otherwise. However, even at this stage, without prejudging the matter, it can be assumed that there was such intent, because if there had been no such intent, we would not have charged him with attempted murder – the prosecutor adds.
