Third-grade primary school students and second-grade middle school students attend free sports and recreational classes at the swimming pool. The municipal government obtained PLN 90,000 from the Ministry of Sport and Tourism for these classes. The children have been taking part in them since March 2011.
In the spring of this year, the classes were still held at the old swimming pool. Since the new school year, the classes have been conducted at the “Orka” water park. It was these classes that a parent criticized in a letter to our editorial office:
I would like to raise this issue because my child is a third-grade student (the class has more than 20 students). The swimming instructor at the “Orka” pool can teach only 15 students at a time. When a group of 15 students is doing exercises in the pool, the rest sit on benches and watch. So my question is: Is this what swimming lessons at the pool should look like, especially when they are already so short? The pool instructor explains that the regulations were established by officials in the high-rise building. In that case, do the officials know how many students there are in school classes? And shouldn't the regulations be changed or another instructor hired?
The deputy head of the Social Affairs Department knows about the matter and is surprised that children can get bored at such a well-equipped pool. “Officials secured funding for swimming lessons, but they do not organize activities for the students,” says Stanisław Wyganowski. “That is the responsibility of the school, the teacher and the supervisor accompanying the children. We realize how large the classes are. Every child who is not learning to swim at a given moment can use the water attractions in the park: the lazy river, paddling pools and slides,” he adds.
