A very serious road accident occurred on Sunday, August 2, at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Sobieskiego Street in Jelenia Góra. As a result of a collision between two passenger cars, one of the vehicles mounted the pavement and hit two pedestrians. Both were taken to hospital, and one of them is in very serious condition.
Initial police findings indicate that the 72-year-old driver of a Suzuki was travelling from the direction of Szklarska Poręba towards central Jelenia Góra. At the intersection, he was travelling straight in a lane designated for right turns, where he collided with a Volkswagen driven by a 31-year-old woman who was exiting a subordinate road.
The force of the impact caused the Suzuki to change direction, mount the pavement and hit a 55-year-old woman and a 57-year-old man. Both injured people were transported to hospital. Police officers said that the man's condition is very serious.
Tests showed that both drivers and the other people involved in the incident were sober.
Police officers, a road-accident reconstruction expert and a prosecutor worked at the scene for many hours. Officers secured evidence and collected material that will help reconstruct the course of the incident and determine who was responsible for causing it.
Investigators stress that final findings will be possible after all procedural activities have been completed, the secured evidence has been analysed and the expert has prepared an opinion.
Police appeal to all road users to exercise particular caution and comply with the applicable road signs. Officers remind people that a moment of inattention, choosing the wrong lane or joining traffic carelessly can lead to tragic incidents, whose victims are often pedestrians as well.
