During earthworks carried out on Tuesday, 28 July, at around 7:00 p.m., a dangerous incident occurred in Kotliska, in Lwówek County. An object resembling unexploded ordnance was discovered.

A Police patrol and an officer with specialist bomb-disposal and pyrotechnics training were immediately dispatched to the site. After examining the discovery, the police officer confirmed that it was an artillery shell dating from World War II.

Until the military bomb disposal patrol arrived, police officers secured the area to eliminate the threat to bystanders. On Wednesday, 29 July, bomb disposal specialists from the 23rd Silesian Artillery Regiment in Bolesławiec safely removed the unexploded ordnance and took it away from the discovery site.

This is another discovery of this kind in the region. Although more than 80 years have passed since the end of World War II, unexploded ordnance and shells that failed to detonate are still found during earthworks and may pose a real threat to life and health.

Police remind the public that if an object resembling unexploded ordnance or a shell that failed to detonate is found, it must not be touched, moved or handled in an attempt to secure it independently. People should move to a safe distance and notify the emergency services as soon as possible by calling 112.

The quick response of the person who reported the discovery, together with the appropriate actions taken by the police officers and bomb disposal specialists, made it possible to safely remove the dangerous object without putting residents at risk.
