On the provincial road no. 292 on the Ścinawa–Dłużyce route. Police traffic officers from the District Police Headquarters in Lubin were conducting a speed check when their attention was drawn to a driver who, on seeing the police car, suddenly turned around and drove off in the opposite direction.
The officers immediately set off after the vehicle and stopped it for a check after a short chase. A 33-year-old resident of Ścinawa Municipality was sitting behind the wheel.
The driver admitted why he wanted to avoid the check
During the intervention, the man behaved nervously and spoke indistinctly. According to the police, he admitted to the officers that he had been frightened of the check because his driving privileges had been revoked. He also said that he had consumed alcohol the previous day and was afraid of a sobriety test.
A check of police databases confirmed that the 33-year-old indeed did not have the right to drive.
The breathalyzer showed nothing, but the drug test raised further suspicions
The breathalyzer test showed that the driver was sober. However, the man's behavior did not convince the officers, who decided to conduct a drug test.
The result was positive, so the 33-year-old was detained. The officers took him to hospital, where blood was drawn for laboratory tests. These results will be crucial for the further proceedings.
He faces up to three years in prison
After the necessary procedures were completed, the man was placed in a police cell. The court will decide his further fate.
If laboratory tests confirm the presence of narcotic substances in his body while he was driving, the 33-year-old will be held responsible for driving under their influence. This offense carries a penalty of up to 3 years in prison. He will also be held responsible for driving despite having his driving privileges revoked.
The police remind the public that both alcohol and drugs significantly reduce concentration, lengthen reaction time and increase the risk of causing a serious accident. Officers announce further checks aimed at removing from the roads drivers who pose a danger to other road users.
