Employees of the District Office took part in the city parade during the Ceramics Festival. Wearing elaborate theatrical costumes and masks, they promoted the completion of the Municipal Theatre, which operated as the German Old Theatre from 1857 to 1944. It is currently owned by the district office and houses MDK im. Stanisława Wyspiańskiego.
The idea for organising the “Sea of Masks” parade came from Katarzyna Biegasiewicz, the district office’s spokesperson. The original masks were created by artist Czesław Matyjewicz, a multiple participant in the International Ceramic and Sculpture Open-Air Workshops. The parade choreography was prepared by Urszula Frąszczak-Matyjewicz, a cultural animator who runs the authorial “Tygrys Ogłuszony Domem” theatre at MDK.
The parade was joined by young people attending the summer theatre workshops organised at MDK, district head Cezary Przybylski (wearing the uniform of the Bolesławiecka Drużyna Rycerska “Syrokomla”) and Dariusz Kwaśniewski, as well as district office employees wearing costumes borrowed from the theatre in Legnica.
“We want the old theatre to become the district office’s brand,” explains Biegasiewicz. “It was a major project and effort to renovate the building. We want residents to be proud of the theatre and for acting companies to perform on its stage regularly.”
The renovation is scheduled to be completed in three months. “Everything indicates that the renovation will be finished in November this year, and in December we will open the theatre with a ceremonial premiere,” says Cezary Przybylski. “We have spoken with Jacek Głomb so that his theatre can prepare the production for the occasion.”
For three years, the theatre in Legnica has maintained a clear presence in Bolesławiec. It has twice staged performances as part of the “Teatr Polska” programme (“Szaweł” in 2009 and “Otello” in 2010). Cooperation with the theatre in Legnica bodes well for Bolesławiec’s new (old) stage.
