Sanitary authorities published a public food safety warning. The notice concerns one batch of Sądecki Bartnik flower pollen in which the permitted level of pyrrolizidine alkaloids was exceeded. According to experts, consuming a product contaminated with these substances may pose a health risk to consumers.

Tests conducted by the State Sanitary Inspection found pyrrolizidine alkaloids at a level exceeding the applicable standards. Based on a risk assessment prepared by the National Institute of Public Health PZH – National Research Institute, it was determined that consuming the product with the detected level of contamination may involve a health risk.

The producer has begun withdrawing the product

According to the notice, the producer has begun the procedure for withdrawing the disputed batch from the market. Product recipients have also been informed of the situation.

The relevant services are also conducting inspections. The District Veterinary Officer in Nowy Sącz has launched an inspection at the producer’s premises and will monitor the implementation of corrective measures related to the exceedance of the maximum permitted levels of pyrrolizidine alkaloids.

What are pyrrolizidine alkaloids?

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids are naturally occurring chemical compounds produced by certain plant species. They can enter food, including bee products, if bees collect pollen from plants containing these substances.

Due to their potentially negative impact on health, their level in food is subject to strict control. If standards are exceeded, supervisory authorities may order products to be withdrawn from circulation.

What are the recommendations for consumers

The Chief Sanitary Inspectorate recommends not consuming the batch of the product indicated in the notice. People who have the flower pollen covered by the warning should check the batch number and best-before date shown on the packaging.
