The 23-year-old was carrying out community service at a facility as ordered by the court in connection with property-related offences he had committed previously. After completing his duties, however, he apparently made a decision that once again brought him into conflict with the law.
According to police findings, as the man was leaving the aforementioned location, he took a bicycle belonging to one of the employees. He then rode it to the town where he lives.
The perpetrator tried to cover his tracks. Investigators said that the bicycle was left some distance from the 23-year-old’s place of residence. The man hoped that this would prevent him from being linked to the theft.
Officers from the Criminal Unit of the Police Station in Kruszyn carried out operational activities that led to the suspect being identified and detained. The officers also recovered the stolen bicycle and returned it to its owner.
The 23-year-old resident of Warta Bolesławiecka Municipality was charged with theft. Under the applicable regulations, this type of offence is punishable by up to five years in prison.
Police remind the public that even seemingly minor thefts can have serious legal consequences, especially when the perpetrator has previously been recorded for similar offences.
