The incident occurred on Monday, after 9 a.m. The duty officer at the District Police Headquarters in Zgorzelec received a report of an altercation outside a shop and of a man who was allegedly carrying a knife. Police officers from the district officers’ unit and Criminal Division officers were sent to the scene.
According to the police findings, the 25-year-old resident of Zgorzelec County allegedly took 30 chocolate bars worth nearly PLN 160 in total from a shelf and put them in his backpack. A shop employee noticed the theft and tried to stop the man before he left the premises.
The situation escalated. According to investigators, the man became aggressive and used force against the shop assistant. One of the customers in the shop came to the woman’s aid. During the struggle, the suspect spilled the contents of his backpack. A knife was among the items.
Fortunately, however, it was not used against the people who intervened.
The man was arrested. He was charged with robbery theft and violating the bodily integrity of the shop employee and her customer.
However, this is not the end of the case. Officers established that the same man was also responsible for two earlier thefts of groceries and drugstore products from one of the supermarkets. The total value of the stolen property exceeded PLN 5,000.
