A harsh sentence was handed down in the case of a tragic road accident that occurred in November 2021 in Lower Silesia. The District Court in Lubin sentenced a 43-year-old Wrocław resident to a total of 15 years in prison. The man was charged, among other things, with causing a fatal accident, stealing a luxury car and drug-related offenses.

The Tragic End of the Theft

The incident occurred on November 22, 2021, on the road between Parchowo and Polkowice. Łukasz K., driving an Audi SQ7 stolen in Germany and worth more than PLN 350,000, was traveling at approximately 90 km/h in a location where the speed limit was 40 km/h.

While performing an evasive maneuver, he crossed into the opposite lane and then onto the shoulder, where he struck an employee of a road construction company. The man died at the scene. After hitting a tree, the driver got out of the wrecked car and fled on foot.

He was arrested three days later in Wrocław, where he had been hiding from law enforcement.

Driving Ban and Drugs

It was established that, at the time of the incident, the perpetrator was subject to an active court-ordered ban on driving motor vehicles. That was not the only offense he had committed. The man was also involved in trafficking significant quantities of drugs, including amphetamine, ecstasy and marijuana.

The court imposed the following individual sentences:

  • 10 years in prison for causing a fatal accident and fleeing the scene,
  • 4 years for burglary committed under recidivism conditions,
  • 3 years for drug-related offenses.

Ultimately, the court imposed a combined sentence of 15 years in prison. In addition, the convicted man received a lifetime ban on driving and was ordered to pay compensatory payments and court costs.

An Accomplice and Further Sentences

The case also resulted in the conviction of another man, Dominik B. – a co-perpetrator of the car theft. He was allegedly the one who drove the main defendant to Germany and escorted the transport of the stolen vehicle. He also fled after the accident and hid in Wrocław.

He was sentenced to 6 years in prison. Significant quantities of drugs were found at his place of residence and in the car, which affected the sentence.

Lawyer Receives a Suspended Sentence

Among the defendants was also 32-year-old lawyer Ewelina S., who was convicted of obstructing proceedings and giving false testimony. The court sentenced her to one year in prison, suspended for three years, and placed her under probation supervision.

Repeat Offenders

As emphasized during the trial, the main defendants had previously been convicted many times, mainly for offenses against property, including car thefts in Germany. They spent a long time in pretrial detention and later served other prison sentences.

The prosecutor’s office assessed the judgment as justified.
