A reader sent us photographs with the note:

A strange strip over Bolesławiec.

And added:

It was moving. When I saw it, it was on the Moon; a few minutes later – in a different place.

What did the lens capture?

Although what can be seen in the photographs might bring science-fiction films to mind, the solution to the mystery is well known. What we see in the photographs is an exceptionally spectacularly illuminated contrail.

Why was the contrail so distinct?

The phenomenon attracted attention because of several overlapping factors:

  • Proximity to the Moon: That night, Earth’s natural satellite acted like a powerful reflector. The ice crystals that make up an aircraft’s contrail scattered the moonlight, giving it an intense white glow.
  • A wind shift: The photographs show a characteristic “break” in the line. This demonstrates the power of nature – at different altitudes, the wind was blowing in different directions, “tearing apart” and shifting the contrail, giving it an unnatural shape.
  • Clear air: The exceptional clarity of the atmosphere meant that even small details were visible from the ground with the naked eye.

Is there any reason for concern?

Experts reassure us that contrails are a natural effect of aviation fuel burning in the low temperatures found at cruising altitudes. Their long persistence in the sky only indicates high humidity in the upper layers of the troposphere, which often heralds an approaching change in the weather.

The night sky over Bolesławiec can be surprising. We thank our reader for their vigilance and for sending these incredible images!
