About Jakub
Jakub is 8 years old. He has been diagnosed with early childhood autism with pervasive disorders of speech and psychomotor development, auditory processing disorder, ADHD, intellectual disability and sensory integration disorder. Severe food and respiratory allergies require him to follow a strict diet. Jakub also struggles with childhood asthma and immune disorders.
This “rich” range of diagnoses means that our son’s life is a daily struggle. Kuba functions in his own world, full of sounds, stimulators and stimuli. He does not understand the dangers present in his surroundings, cannot communicate his needs or conduct a simple dialogue. His answers to questions are often limited to “yes” or “no,” creating a huge communication barrier. Meanwhile, every day we fight to help him find his way, at least to some extent, in the real world and so that in the future he can be even slightly independent.
The greatest challenge for our son is school. The amount of stimuli coming from his surroundings means that Jakub cannot concentrate, and sitting at a desk for 45 minutes is absolutely impossible for him. For this reason, he attends some classes individually. Impaired social interactions mean that Kuba feels a much weaker sense of belonging to the group and class, which leads to many difficult situations. As a result of overloading his nervous system, he often reacts with aggression. Increasingly, we hear between the lines that our son “hurts” other children by being present in class.
The cognitive, emotional and social development of a child on the autism spectrum requires constant, regular therapy. Kuba has been attending neurological speech therapy continuously for 7 years; he requires sensory integration classes, physiotherapy, support from a psychologist and pedagogue, as well as Social Skills Training. He is also under the constant supervision of a psychiatrist, allergist, neurologist and ophthalmologist. The vast majority of these appointments are private.
The cost of one therapy session, depending on the specialist, is PLN 150 to 200 per hour. Added to this are the costs of travel, medicines, medical appointments and a specialized diet.
Funding all of this is possible thanks to the support of people who donate their 1.5% of tax to Jakub. Tax filing season is a time when we can help without losing anything. For many people, 1.5% of tax is just a formality. One box on the PIT tax return, a few seconds, and it is forgotten. For us, it is a real decision about whether our child will receive more hours of therapy or be left alone with his problems.
Your 1.5% of tax is not a gesture but real help: it means classes that can take place and a chance for development. Finally, it is hope that one day Jakub will be able to find his way in a world that is too difficult for him today.
