At the end of January, the District Court in Jelenia Góra sentenced a 47-year-old man to seven years in prison. He was charged with so-called marriage fraud against four women and fraud against three other people with whom he conducted business. The court also imposed a fine (PLN 105,000) and ordered him to compensate all the victims for the damage caused.
– The investigation was conducted by the District Prosecutor’s Office in Jelenia Góra, which filed an indictment in this case with the Court on October 31, 2019. The man was charged with 12 offences – prosecutor Ewa Węglarowicz-Makowska of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Jelenia Góra reports.
What did the investigators establish?
It was established that from November 2006 to 2016, the accused lived in cohabiting relationships with four women who did not know about one another. He has a child with each of them.
How did the fraudster operate?
At the beginning of each relationship, he showered his partners with gifts and promised marriage. Once he had gained their trust, he persuaded them to use their assets as security for loans and credits he took out and to lend him money themselves. Some of the victims also granted him power of attorney to manage their assets.
As a result of his actions, one of the women lost the house where she lived with his child after signing consent to mortgage the property belonging to her as security for a loan taken out by the accused, worth PLN 2,600,000.
The total value of the damage caused to these victims is approximately PLN 9 million.
Moreover, during the same period in Jelenia Góra, the accused defrauded three other people by taking out loans from them that he never repaid, totaling PLN 1,082,000.
Tomasz K. never admitted to committing the offences of which he was accused. He had previously been convicted numerous times for offences against property.
The verdict is not final.
