Progress on key sections
The revitalization of railway line No. 283 on the Zebrzydowa–Osiecznica–Kliczków–Żagań section is entering another phase. As shown in material published on the SU46 TV channel, significant quantities of ballast and new sleepers have already been gathered at Zebrzydowa station, signaling the start of work on the previously unrepaired section of the route.
Until now, work there had been suspended because railway access to the Glass Sand Mine in Osiecznica had to be maintained. This will change once work is completed on the section running through Świętoszów toward Żagań, allowing technical traffic to be redirected along another route.
– “The Żagań–Świętoszów and Świętoszów–Osiecznica–Kliczków routes are already in the final stage of revitalization,” the recording’s author reports.
At Zebrzydowa station, in addition to the renovated fifth track, a new platform is planned, 76 cm high, at least 3.5 m wide and 85 m long. The entire Zebrzydowa–Osiecznica–Kliczków section is to be equipped with a bidirectional line-blocking system.
Świętoszów: most of the work still lies ahead for the contractor
The most advanced infrastructure changes are planned in the area of Świętoszów station. A new track layout and two platforms with parameters analogous to those at Zebrzydowa are being built there. The station will be controlled from Żagań, while the adjacent routes will be equipped with modern traffic-control systems.
The investment includes, among other things, the installation of nine electric switch drives, three additional drives with derailing devices, and eighteen light signals. Some infrastructure was not shown in the video material because of its military purpose.
Contract annex and rising costs
In the second half of 2025, an annex to the contract was signed, increasing investment funding by more than PLN 50 million. The changes result from the need to correct the track geometry and adapt engineering structures—viaducts and culverts—to current regulations.
As a result, the total cost of revitalizing the 45-kilometer section of line No. 283 from Zebrzydowa to Żagań will rise to approximately PLN 430 million. The modified track geometry may in the future enable train speeds to be increased beyond the previously assumed 80 km/h, although at the current stage this does not determine whether regular passenger services will return. The line is being modernized primarily with military transport in mind.
Fatal accident at the construction site
A tragic incident casts a shadow over the investment. It occurred on December 3, 2025, near the former Łozy stop. During revitalization work, while reversing a tractor with a trailer, a 30-year-old vehicle operator struck a 51-year-old construction worker.
– “As a result of his injuries, the man died at the scene,” SU46 TV reported.
The circumstances of the accident were investigated in explanatory proceedings.
What work remains to be done?
On most of the Osiecznica-Kliczków–Żagań section, reconstruction of engineering structures—four viaducts and 24 culverts—has already been completed. The new tracks have been laid and tamped, but work on railway-road crossings still needs to be finalized, along with the installation of complete signaling, particularly in Osiecznica and Świętoszów.
According to the current schedule, completion of the entire investment has been postponed from 2026 to 2027. The first stage, covering the Osiecznica-Kliczków–Żagań section, is already in its final phase, however.
