Low air temperatures, precipitation and localized icy patches make road and sidewalk surfaces very slippery. Bridges, viaducts, forest roads and shaded sections are particularly dangerous, as black ice can persist there for a long time. Fog is an additional difficulty, at times reducing visibility to several dozen metres.

– In such conditions, a moment of inattention can lead to a collision or accident – warns junior warrant officer Kamil Szpatowski, press officer of the Złotoryja District Police Headquarters.

Such a road incident occurred on 15 January in Proboszczów. The spokesperson:

The 24-year-old woman failed to exercise due caution while driving and did not adjust her speed to the road conditions, as a result of which she lost control of the vehicle and drove into a roadside river.

Fortunately, none of the incident’s participants was injured.

Officers:

We remind drivers of the need to adjust their speed to the prevailing conditions, maintain a safe distance between vehicles and avoid sudden manoeuvres. It is also important to use lights correctly – in conditions of limited visibility, dipped headlights are mandatory, and in dense fog, fog lights should also be used.

And they add:

We appeal for prudence, responsibility and mutual respect on the road. Safety depends on every road user. Let us remain cautious and make sure that everyone reaches their destination safely.
