On November 22 this year, the incident occurred. – At approximately 2:40 p.m., the duty officer at the Municipal Police Headquarters in Jelenia Góra received a report of a fire in a three-story, 12-room residential building occupied by eight men – reports junior inspector Edyta Bagrowska, press officer of the Jelenia Góra Municipal Police Headquarters. – Due to the real threat to the residents’ lives, a patrol from the Police Station in Karpacz was immediately dispatched to the scene.

At the scene, the officers noticed intense smoke and flames coming from the second floor and attic of the building. Outside the building, they found three people who had managed to get out on their own. According to their account, the remaining five residents were still inside.

Despite the extremely difficult conditions – limited visibility, dense smoke and very high temperature – the officers decided to enter the burning building. Inside, they found four people in a state of alcohol intoxication, completely unable to evacuate on their own. The officers forcibly led them outside, then re-entered the smoke-filled rooms, from which they carried out the last man, who was asleep.

A total of eight people were evacuated from the burning building. None of them required medical assistance. During the operation, two officers from the Prevention Team in Karpacz suffered carbon monoxide poisoning as a result of the heavy smoke. One of them was transported by an emergency medical team to a hospital in Kowary and was hospitalized.

In addition, at the scene, police officers arrested two men, aged 37 and 35, suspected of causing a fire that endangered the lives and health of many people and property of considerable value. The remaining residents were provided with assistance and accommodated by the Municipal Crisis Management Centre in Karpacz in other lodging facilities.
