The incident occurred on 9 October in the Nowogrodziec municipality. Bolesławiec police:

Officers on duty in the area of one of the towns noticed a vehicle whose driver accelerated sharply upon seeing a police car. This behaviour aroused the officers’ suspicions, and they decided to stop the car for a check.

The officers gave the driver visual and audible signals to stop, but he ignored the instructions and began to flee. The police gave chase.

While fleeing from the police, the driver flagrantly broke traffic regulations—he significantly exceeded the speed limit in a built-up area, failed to obey road signs, including the “STOP” sign, and performed dangerous overtaking manoeuvres, creating a real threat to other road users.

At one point, the man lost control of the vehicle and drove into a roadside ditch. Both he and the car’s passenger then tried to escape on foot. It was of little use; both were apprehended shortly afterwards.

Why did he flee?

It turned out that the driver, a 26-year-old resident of the Nowogrodziec municipality, did not have a driving licence, and the car he was driving did not have a valid technical inspection. A breathalyser test showed that he was sober, but a drug test returned a positive result. The man was detained and taken to hospital, where blood was drawn for further testing. Laboratory results will show what substances he was under the influence of.

The detained man will face charges for failing to stop for a traffic check, driving without a licence, causing a road safety hazard and other offences. The laboratory test results will determine the further charges. The court will decide his future.
