The incident occurred on October 10, after 3:00 p.m., on national road No. 30, near Krzewie Wielkie. – The duty officer of the County Police Headquarters in Lwówek Śląski received a report of a pedestrian being hit. Police officers from the Gryfów station and emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene – reports junior aspirant Olga Łukaszewicz, press officer of the Lwówek County Police Headquarters.
Preliminary findings by the officers indicated that the driver of an Audi, while overtaking, lost control of the car, skidded and hit a pedestrian who was walking along the road shoulder. The spokesperson said: – The driver then left the scene without providing assistance to the injured person.
Fortunately, the 53-year-old resident of Augustów County did not suffer life-threatening injuries.
The police immediately undertook a series of actions aimed at identifying and arresting the perpetrator, also informing neighboring units about the situation. Less than two hours later, the duty officer of the County Police Headquarters in Lubań received a report of a car fire in a nearby forest.
It turned out to be the same vehicle that had been involved in the collision. Police officers from Lubań arrested a 30-year-old resident of Lubań County, who admitted to driving the Audi. The man was sober, and preliminary tests ruled out the presence of drugs in his system. A check of police databases showed that he did not have a driving licence.
The arrested man, who explained his behavior by saying he was… in shock after the incident, was placed in a police cell. On October 12, Gryfów police officers brought him to the prosecutor’s office, where he was charged, among other things, with failing to provide assistance to an injured person. (He admitted to this.)
He now faces up to three years in prison.
