Chimney soot fires are a serious fire hazard in homes heated with solid fuels such as wood or coal. They occur when soot accumulates in the chimney—a flammable deposit made up of unburned fuel particles. Soot can ignite as a result of very high temperatures or sparking, and a fire in the chimney spreads quickly, sometimes even throughout the entire building.
A few important facts:
-
Warning signs: thick black smoke from the chimney, unusual crackling sounds or sparks.
-
Causes: wet wood, cleaning the chimney too infrequently, improper fuel combustion.
-
Consequences: a chimney fire, structural damage, smoke poisoning or a fire throughout the house.
-
Prevention: regular chimney cleaning and inspections, using dry wood, checking the chimney draft, and using suitable fuels.
Soot fires can be very violent, so when one occurs, do not attempt to extinguish a chimney fire with water, as the rapidly generated steam can cause an explosion—it is best to call the fire service immediately.
